The Aceh Compass

An Indonesian legend, depth, robustness, and earthy elegance.

The route & origin

Where this route begins

Our final destination takes us to the exotic island of Sumatra, to the rugged highlands of Aceh, Takengon. At 1,100–1,600 m, the Koperasi Baitul Qiradh Baburrayyan (KBQB) cooperative cultivates a fascinating blend of varieties. Deeply shaped by the tropical rainforest and dense humidity, this remote terroir defines the unique, robust character of these shade-grown beans, all cultivated under sustainable practices that directly support the local community.

The process · Wet-hulled (Giling Basah)

From cherry to bean

This coffee is distinguished by Giling Basah, or Wet-Hulling, a method almost exclusive to Indonesia and fundamental to its bold flavor. The parchment shell is removed while the beans still hold a very high moisture content (30–35%), then immediately exposed to open air for accelerated drying. This rare process is responsible for the legendary low acidity, thick body, and deep earthy notes that Sumatra lovers treasure.

The cup profile

In the cup

This is a rich, structural "meditation coffee" that delivers an intensely bold experience. A dense, heavy, syrupy body is dominated by prominent notes of intense dark chocolate and deep cocoa, beautifully accented by earthy rainforest undertones and a subtle hint of dried figs, leading into a long, lingering finish.

Why we love it this way

Full immersion in a French Press is exceptional for Sumatra, perfectly highlighting its dense, syrupy texture and rich, earthy complexity. Extracted as espresso, it creates a heavy, deeply structured shot. Thanks to its low acidity and bold profile, it's the ultimate base for a rich latte or cappuccino, its character is never lost when paired with milk.

Sold as whole beans — grind right before brewing for peak flavor.
